WK2 (8-28) - Intro to ARG

Consider the proverbial ice broken. Tonight we tackled the frustrating task of defining the undefinable by asking the daunting question "What IS an Alternate Reality Game anyway?" We considered a number of definitions and characteristics of the genre. Perhaps by the end of the semester we will have a definition.

We also reviewed the Syllabus, talked about the PUSH vs PULL homework (email your list to me!), and watched some of the 1997 movie: “The Game

THIS WEEK:

1) Twitter me at "albrackin" and lets all start tracking each other. (its a sort of unofficial EMAC tradition - or so I'm told.)

2) Log in and get onto this blog and start making comments, posting links and making it a proper social networking tool. I recommend you subscribe to the feed by clicking the option on the right.

3) Get onto ARGn, UF, ARGology, and Despoiler - and start lurking and playing a game!

4) Email me if you have not already so I have your proper email address.

HW: Create a "fake internet presence" (alt) that can not be linked to you in any way. Email me (from your real email) a link to this fake “you’s” mark on the web by Wed night – but don’t tell anybody else what it is.

Twitter - I'm Candiluu. I used my real name in addition to my alias by choice, not because commies in (and out of) the department told me to do so. I'm debating taking them both off my follow list, but am waiting to see if they stop the control freak crap and allow the tool to evolve as it should: without their dictating how people register. (And yes, I'm what my boyfriend calls hippie liberal scum who hates people trying to tell her what to do with her freedoms.)

candiluu... what do you mean you were told to use both your real name and your alias? I don't get...

We're going to talk about this in class Thursday - the main difference between FaceBook and other social networking tools (like twitter) is that it somehow persuaded people to use their REAL identities - something that people have resisted in the past and companies have made gobs of money off of (think classmates.com) - the second thing is that it fishes for your contacts by searching real emails - a function which can only work if you put your real info in the first place. Down below this post is an option to use "OpenID" - if you don't know what that is GOOGLE IT! No more blind Internet presence! Huzzah! (Oh and that sort of tracking is Fascist not Commie in my opinion - but then I've been accused of worse.)

This blogging stuff is Great!!

I'll have to remember to keep my "real" self and my "alias" apart!

Don't want reality mixing with the "unreal"!

Im not sure if this is where im supposed to blo but I hope so. Anyway, Ive never blogged before but im enjoying it so far. As far as mixing into a community goes, I wasnt really sure where to start, its not easy for me. But I think ill get the hang of it.

I'm goesbyma on twitter although I've used it 3 times. I don't really get the point of it. I do use Loopt on my iPhone, I hear they're similar but I can choose to give my exact location to a set group of people. I'm definitely not ready to give that out the mainstream audience. :)

Alright, I've discovered that I've failed to create an alias. I thought I had it covered with a disposable email address signed up in gmail...haha haha. Well, I discovered that blogspot knew it was me when I tried to set up an alias blog account. So much for that.
